Lake Powell - A Lake is Born

Lake Powell is a baby in the geographical world of the Colorado River and Grand Canyon. It's creation was the result of the demand for water by the prospering, fast growing and desert thirsty southwestern United States. After much debate, Glen Canyon Dam was commissioned to be engineered and construction began with a demolition blast keyed by the push of a button by President Dwight D. Eisenhower at his desk in the Oval Office on October 1, 1956. The project completed in 1963 and the mighty Colorado began filling the lake. 17 years later in 1980 Lake Powell had reached her final levels. Comprising the most spectacular scenery in the world this lake is home to 2,000 miles of shore line weaving in and out of vermillion cliffs and canyons. Today, its a water sport mecca and one of the most incredible locations on earth for the modern person to reset their clock to a place of tranquility.
